At the 54thAnnual Grammy Awards in 2012, the ABB was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award, in part a celebration of the 40th anniversary of the group’s seminal album Eat a Peach. Gregg himself, inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1995, was also nominated for Best Blues Album for his stellar solo record, Low Country Blues.
Allman’s critically acclaimed tell-all memoir, My Cross To Bear, was a New York Times Bestseller for many weeks. The book focuses on his journey as a struggling artist through the formation of the Allman Brothers Band and their ultimate explosion on the music scene, informed by the hindsight of Allman today, the survivor of unimaginable loss, drug and alcohol addiction, as well as a recent liver transplant.
In October 2014, the Allman Brothers Band wrapped up their storied forty-five year career, and In November, of that year, Allman received the “Living Legend” award from Classic Rock magazine, and recently was the guest of honor at the 67th annual BMI/NAB Dinner. In the summer of 2015, Allman released Gregg Allman Live: Back to Macon, GA (Concord), a stellar live DVD/CD package that captured him and his eight-piece solo band in a high-energy performance. This emotive show was recorded in January 2014 at the Grand Opera House in Macon, GA, the Middle Georgia town where it all began for the Allman Brothers Band.
He is currently on tour doing dates with Peter Frampton and ZZ Top, as well as headlining his very own Laid Back Festival, an extraordinary one-day event in five American cities throughout the summer. The traveling musical caravan is headlined and curated by the legendary Allman, alongside an all-star lineup that includes ZZ Top, Peter Frampton, Blackberry Smoke, Jason Isbell, America, Marshall Tucker Band, Shovels & Rope, Brothers Osborne, Jaimoe’s Jasssz Band, Orleans and many more.
Named after Allman’s classic 1973 solo debut, the inaugural Laid Back Festival was held last summer at Wantagh, NY’s Nikon at Jones Beach Theater, presented in partnership by Allman, longtime manager Michael Lehman, and Live Nation. Now boasting an expanded itinerary, the 2016 Laid Back features an eclectic range of artists performing on two distinctive stages, the main “Laid Back” stage and more intimate “Low Country” stage. The latter – which takes its name from Allman’s 2011 solo masterpiece, LOW COUNTRY BLUES – serve sas a special showcase for rising local artists and musicians from every region on the festival tour’s itinerary. Much more than just a concert, the Laid Back Festival celebrates America’s diverse and delicious food and drink, with more than 20 regional restaurants, food trucks, breweries, wineries, and other artisans represented at each festival stop.
Allman is making plans for a new solo record to be released in early 2017.
